Did you know that Thursday, August 20th is National Bacon Lover’s Day? We think it’s a bit outrageous to have a day devoted to bacon lovers, as clearly one single day out of the year is hardly a sufficient celebration of bacon and the people who love it, but we’ll take what we can get.

In the run-up to the big day, we’ve been reading up on bacon. And while the anticipation is killing us, we… wait a second… we don’t actually have to wait for the 20th to eat some bacon… OK, stand by — headed to the kitchen for a minute.

And we’re back! You probably didn’t even know we left. Anyway, in addition to frying up some bacon, we’ve also cooked up a few fun facts about this fantastic food, and we thought our fellow bacon lovers would love to know ’em!

So without further ado, as if you needed any convincing, here are 5 Reasons to Celebrate Bacon!

4 - The Average American Eats Almost 18 Pounds of Bacon a Year!

The actual figure is 17.9 pounds of bacon per person. And guess what? Average per person consumption in England is just .04 pounds less. They eat an approximated 17.86 pounds per person!

3 - People Have Been Eating Bacon for More Than 3,000 Years!

The Ancient Chinese were eating salted pork belly meat as far back as 1500 BC, making salt cured bacon one of the oldest known foods still enjoyed today.

2 - You Can’t Invest In Pork Bellies Anymore

In 1961, the Chicago Mercantile Exchange began listing pork bellies as a tradable commodity. The units were 40,000-pound slabs of meat made up of thousands of individual cuts weighing around 12 pounds each! But in 2011, pork bellies were de-listed, so these days if you want to “invest” in bacon, your return will only be it’s delicious flavor.
